Day of the Dead (known as Día de los Muertos in Spanish) is celebrated in Mexico between October 31st and November 2nd. On this holiday, Mexicans remember and honor their deceased loved ones. It's not a gloomy or morbid occasion, rather it is a festive and colorful holiday celebrating the lives of those who have passed on. Mexicans visit cemeteries, decorate the graves and spend time there, in the presence of their deceased friends and family members. They also make elaborately decorated altars (called ofrendas) in their homes to welcome the spirits.Mexico's indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead was recognized by UNESCO as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2008.

How to make an "ofrenda" or altar

  • A table, shelf or flat surface on which to build your altar
  • Two long sugar cane stalks (or other material) to make an arch
  • Boxes or crates to create levels
  • A tablecloth and papel picado
  • A photo of the person to whom the altar is dedicated
  • A glass of water
  • Flowers, preferably marigolds
  • Fruit, bread, and other foods
  • Candles and incense
  • Things that the person enjoyed in life

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in the U. S, from September 15 to October 15 to celebrate the Hispanic heritage, culture and contribution to our country. In addition, seven Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days during this period.

This project is due on October 3.  This will not be done in class.
