Parent Letter Faith Reflection

Then astonishment seized them all and they glorified God, and, struck with awe, they said, “We have seen incredible things today.”/Todos quedaron llenos de asombro y glorificaban a Dios, deciendo con gran temor, “Hoy hemos visto cosas maravillosas.” - Luke 5:26

A friend of mine has a phrase that I have liked from the first time I heard it: It’s only when you wonder that you can step into the which is wonderful. I hadn’t thought about this for some time, but it came right to mind when I received the October “Monastic Way” newsletter. Last month’s focus was wonder and the daily reflections elaborated on this theme.

In going about our day we rely much on rules, information, and facts. Rules are helpful; knowing what’s in the DMV handbook makes driving safe; information about what you have on hand in your cupboards can help with making dinner. Helpful as information is we also need to simply wonder.

“Wonder,” the newsletter tells us “is God’s way of getting our attention. To be in awe of something is a very special state of mind. It teaches us our place in the universe and leaves up more able to honor the place of others, as well. It teaches us that life is really about bigger things than ourselves.”

Knowledge is learning things while wonder is thinking about what may be - wonder gives us a different focus. “It is wonder that leads us to knowledge, that drives us to discover, that enables us to decipher the world around us.” So, go, wonder, and step into that which is wonderful.
