Welcome to 3rd grade!!! I have been teaching 3rd grade at Sacred Heart Academy since 2005. I graduated from Cal State San Bernardino in 2002 with a B.A. in Liberal Studies and a minor in music and I earned my teaching credential from the University of Redlands.  I have been a parishioner at Holy Name of Jesus since 1978.  My husband, Roger, and I were married here.  My son attended Sacred Heart Academy from kindergarten through eighth grade!   So, needless to say, my family is very committed to this parish and school.  I truly enjoy teaching 3rd grade and try to make learning fun, engaging, and relevant.

May Crowning Flowers

This Friday is our May Crowning Mass.  It is customary for each class to have a basket of flowers to present at the altar.  Please have your student bring fresh flowers to class on Friday morning.  If you are good at arraigning flowers,(I am not good at this!)  I could use your help putting our flower basket together.  Thank you!

Chaperone/Driver

We are in need for more drivers for the trip to Assistencia on Thursday.  Right now we have enough seats for 23 students.  We could use one or two more drivers.  Could it be you???

we have room for one chaperone for the field trip to see Snowflake.  Please email me if you are interested.

School Rosary

If you are able to, please join us tomorrow at 8:45a.m. for the school rosary.  The 3rd and 4th grade classes will be presenting the Living Rosary to the school.

Chaperones

Great news!!!

For our field trip to Palm Springs, Mrs. Williams changed the number of chaperones we can have!  Our class can have 10 chaperones!!!  I have received 2 emails from parents wanting to come along with us.  Please email me to let me know that you would like to chaperone this field trip.

Permission slips went home today.

Field trip to Assistencia:  I have one parent who volunteered to drive for us.  We need enough seats to get 29 students and 1 teacher.  Please consider volunteering for this trip.  It is well worth while.  Permission slips will go out tomorrow.

DRIVERS/CHAPERONES NEEDED

We have two field trips quickly coming up:

ASISTENCIA VILLA:  Thurs, May 8th from 10:15 -11:30

This field trip was arranged just today.  We will be going to Asistencia Villa in Redlands with Mr. Turner, to visit with and entertain the residence.  This is one of the best field trips because we are truly spreading the Good News with our visit.  The residents look forward to our classes to visit each month.  I hope you will be able to join us.

Chaperones needed on Tuesday May 13th ~ all day.

The 1st - 3rd grade classes will be getting on a bus and head to the McCallum Theater in Palm Desert to see a play.  We will need 5 chaperones for this trip.  Because this is a ticketed event, there is a limit to the number of chaperones we can bring.  The first 5 people to respond by email will have the opportunity to join us.

Of course, each driver/chaperone must have completed all requirements for volunteers.

Heads up on the Literature Festival

This year for our spring festival, the 3rd grade class will be doing an author study of Roald Dahl.  In class we will be reading three Roald Dahl novels:  The Witches, The BFG, and James and the Giant Peach.  With these three novels we will be completing various vocabulary and comprehension activities.  We will also be comparing and contrasting the stories.  Each student will need to independently read one more Roald Dahl book.  Perhaps this can be read during Easter break.  Many students have checked out a Roald Dahl book from our school library and have gotten a head start in their reading.  As the festival is on May 22nd, we will need to have our readings completed fairly soon so that we can proceed with our projects.  More information will follow after Easter break.

Cesar Chavez - long-handled hoe

Today we learned about Cesar Chavez and what he fought for for the farm workers of America. One change that came about was the removal of the short-handled hoe as a tool for the migrant workers. The students had to move the Cheerio seeds with their short handled hoes. They experienced how difficult it is to work when you are stooped for such a long time. This was just one minute - farm workers did this 12-14 hours a day in hot weather. Then they tried it again with long-handled hoes. Much better!

Sochi Olympian Cory Butner visited SHA today.  Cory is a driver on the two man bobsled team.  He told us a bit about himself, answered a lot of questions, and even spent the time to give everyone an autograph!
