Holiness consists simply in doing God’s will, and being just what God wants us to be/La santidad consiste simplemente en hacer la voluntad de Dios y ser justo lo que Dios quiere que seamos.— Saint Thérèse of Lisieux

Pope Francis was not the only one to honor Saint Thérèse of Lisieux on the 150th anniversary of her birth. Petitioned by France, UNESCO also officially recognized the “spiritual, cultural, and educational contribution to humanity of Therese Martin [her given name].”

Fr. Thierry Hénault-Morel, rector of the Shrine of Alençon (where Thérèse was born), said of this young Saint in an interview last year that “her doctrine, her teaching, and the path she traces are addressed to all of humanity.”  Her teaching, known as her “science of love,” is something that “transcends all times and all places and is found in all cultures.” Her science of love “unites all men and women of this world,” he continued, “because it corresponds to the search for the meaning of our world, to the search for what is deepest in human beings, which is to love.”

Thérèse shows us that holiness is attainable by all of us because at its core it’s about simplicity and showing love in the ordinary events of our daily lives; “What matters in life is not great deeds but great love. Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice,” she tells us, “here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love. Our Lord does not look so much at the greatness of our actions, or even their difficulty, as at the love with which we do them.”
