Parent Letter Faith Reflection

As stewards of God’s creation, we are called to make the earth a beautiful garden for the human family./Como administradores de la creación de Dios, estamos llamados a hacer de la tierra un hermoso jardín para la familia humano.—Pope Francis to young people in Manila, Jan 2015

In calling this year of prayer before the 2025 Jubilee Year, Pope Francis hopes prayer will became as much of a habit for us as breathing. One of the ways he will help encourage this is by having “Schools of Prayer.” These “Schools” will be moments for people to pray together in a variety of ways, from adoration to thanksgiving. While this will happen in the Vatican we can turn to different types of prayers here. One way we can do this is by turning to nature. Next time you are on a hike or walk along one of the many trails Redlands and the surrounding cities have, you can offer this Prayer of Gratitude for Creation by Fiona Murdoch:

God of the universe, we thank you for your many gifts: for the beauty of Creation and its rich and varied fruits, for clean water and fresh air, for food and shelter, animals and plants.

Forgive us for the times we have taken the Earth’s resources for granted, and wasted what you have given us. Transform our hearts and minds so that we learn to care and share, to touch the Earth with gentleness and with love, respecting all living things.

We pray for all those who suffer as a result of our waste, greed, and indifference. And we pray that the day will come when everyone has enough food and clean water. Help us to respect the rights of all people and all species and help us to willingly share your gifts today and always. Amen
