Faith reflection: Mercy—Love in action

In his column, in the September Inland Catholic Byte ,Ted Furlow talks about how people can have a ‘flat earth’ mentality that gives them a sense of security.  “Unencumbered by new ideas, challenges and choice,” he writes, they don’t have to “risk a questioning glance at the horizon.”  Luckily, however, there are folks who wonder what is around the bend, or what is beyond the horizon, and they venture out into the unknown.  We can have this ’flat earth’ idea with our faith also, but, as Furlow shows, Pope Francis is not one who subscribes to this.  The Pope is one who “reaches out past the curve of what we supposed to be truth, to see what God has for us if we are willing to explore His horizon.”

Going beyond the horizon is what our hope is for our new Jesus, Go! that replaces the Question of the Week, and for these 7th grade essays on evangelizing through mercy.  What beautiful things will we discover around the bend that we might not have seen if we had simply stayed at home?  As Pope Francis has been showing us for several years now, we will make some wonderfully amazing discoveries.  To this end I chose to use Sheridyn’s essay this week for the roadmap she lays out for us faith explorers.  With this in hand we will have the necessary bravery and guidance as we venture out to bring mercy beyond the horizon.

How can I evangelize mercy?

By Sheridyn C.

There are several ways you can evangelize mercy.  A couple ways you can evangelize mercy is living by the fruits of the Holy Spirit.  The fruits of the Holy Spirit are a great way you can evangelize mercy because there are nine fruits.  They are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.  If we live by these great qualities we will be true followers of Christ and share the good word to all those around us.

If we live by the example of God we will show others what true mercy is.  If we love our neighbors as God has loved us we will be true disciples of Christ.

Reminders: This Thursday evening at 7p is Cinema for the Soul.  Come learn about our newly canonized Saint Teresa of Calcutta through her own letters.  Join us upstairs in the Youth Room in the parish hall.

Next Wednesday, 28 September 2016  begins the 40 Days for Life vigil outside the Planned Parenthood in San Bernardino.  Come and pray with others who support life; the vigil hours are from 6a-6p daily until 6 November.
