Parent Letter Faith Reflection

For she (Wisdom) is a breath of the power of God, and a pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty...For she is a reflection of eternal light, a spotless mirror of the working of God, and an image of his goodness. - Wisdom 7: 25-26

In the past couple weeks I have glanced through booklets and other materials to be used as reflection aides during Lent. Their focus, appropriately enough, reflect the abstinence and more solemn tone of the upcoming season. Over the weekend when I read the above passage from the book of Wisdom it reminded me of how during the faith reflection time with 7th grade my point often is to see how they can find God in all things. A few weeks ago I had shown a video of near perfect smoke rings coming from Mt Etna in Sicily. I smiled when I read what one of them wrote: When I see the smoke ring I think it’s like God and the angels partying and making some art in the world.

The 40 days of Lent may be more solemn, but do not lose sight of the joy of God. God is making art everywhere, as several other 7th graders said in their comments. May we continue to see the glory of God even as we give up meat, walk the Stations of the Cross, or spend more time in quiet prayer.

Dear Bishop Barnes

by David D.

   Dear Bishop Barnes,

I was so happy to meet you last year. Also, I think you did an excellent job last year and your other years of being bishop. I know the Lord is proud. All I wish is that I had gotten to know you longer. God bless you.

I would just like to ask the new bishop, “Are you ready?” I know that you are going to be great. And we are waiting for your arrival, just like the Israelites were waiting for the Messiah. Thank you for answering the call to God. God bless you.

Second chances come in all sort of guises. Running a marathon may not be everyone’s first thought for getting a second chance, but for some folks on skid row in Los Angeles it was. Seeing the dignity in all people, even those who were homeless, drug addicts, or being rehabilitated after release from prison, a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge starts a running club. Come Thursday, February 27 to the Olive Hall to find out how this changed the lives of those with little hope.

God bless,
