Parent Letter Faith Reflection

Talent is like electricity. We don’t understand it, we use it. - Maya Angelou

During the beginning of the quarantine the Getty Museum proposed a challenge to take a piece of art and recreate it only using things at home. The talent and creativity simply amazed me and it was fun each day to see what people used to get the end result. I also knew this was going to be something I would do with the 7th graders the first chance I got. That chance came last week and they did not disappoint.

Watching the 7th graders put their talents to work was so enjoyable. Everyone attacked their rendition differently. It was fun trying to guess what art piece they had picked as I saw the items they were collecting, cutting out, or in one really funny moment, watching Sophia R., without missing a beat, use her foot to hold a brown lunch sack to the wall while she reached for the scissors or tape she had left on her desk.

These days as we still need to social distance, wear masks and go about our day to day activities differently using our talents can be an important gift we give to others to get through these trying times. If your talent happens to be something that makes people smile, like watching 7th graders interpret art, all the better, and maybe you’ll be able to say with Erma Bombeck, “When I stand before [You] at the end of my life, I would hope that I would have not have a single bit of talent left, and [can] say, I used everything you gave me.”
