Parent Letter Faith Reflection

Saint Joseph is very much an important part of the Christmas story; from bringing the family to Bethlehem to be counted in the census, to protecting Mary and Jesus from the dangers that arose after the baby is born, Joseph is ever present, even if silent.

Looking at the importance of Joseph over the centuries, in 1870 Saint Joseph was proclaimed the Patron and Protector of the Universal Church. To celebrate this 150th anniversary Pope Francis last week declared 8 Dec 2020 - 8 Dec 2021 the Year of Saint Joseph.

The decree announcing this year devoted to Saint Joseph sees this as a way for the all the faithful to find “comfort and relief from the serious human and social tribulations which today afflict the contemporary world.”

As one who has deep devotion to Saint Joseph, I have to say this gave me comfort knowing I’m not going into the upcoming new year alone. Joseph will be by my side, our side; and with Joseph to guide and protect us may we have a blessed Christmas and joyful 2021.

Below is part of the prayer Pope Francis wrote for this Year of Saint Joseph:

Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,
and defend us from every evil.  Amen.
