After Jesus had finished speaking, he said to Simon Peter, “Put out into deep water and lower your nests for a catch.” Simon Peter said in reply, “Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lover the nets.” When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. To be transformed is a process that won’t necessarily have a neat beginning or end. It takes trust and discernment because we like routines. Though we also need routines this can make it hard at times to step out of our comfort zone, but wanting to stay where we are, or to even go back to the way things were in the past, is not good. Pope Francis even said this is not being Christian.
Speaking at an international conference on moral theology in May, the Pope told those gathered that “there is a difference between wanting to go back in time and drawing inspiration from one’s roots in order to move forward with Christ.”
Looking back can be good because, “Without roots we cannot progress,” he said. “But to go in reverse is to go back in order to have a form of defense, a safety measure that saves us from the risk of going forward, the Christian risk of carrying the faith, the Christian risk of journeying with Jesus Christ.”
There are more possibilities than our routines lead us to believe if we can step beyond them. To help us be transformed one thing we can do is call upon the Holy Spirit. This traditional prayer can be a starting point that will help us move beyond routines that our limiting our growth.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, kindle in them the fire of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shalt renew the face of the earth./Ven, Espíritu Santo, llena los corazones de tus fieles, y enciende en ellos el fuego de tu amor. Envía tu Espíritu y todo será creado y renovarás la faz de la tierra.
