Parent Letter Faith Reflection

I'm content to do my little bit. Sometimes people think they have to do big things in order to make change. But if each one would light a candle we'd have a tremendous light. -

Servant of God, Sister Thea Bowman

We are focusing again on a documentary to watch, and with the Feast of All Saints Day coming up soon, the timing of this movie about a Saint in the making is quite fitting.

I learned about this documentary, "Going Home Like a Shooting Star: Thea Bowman's Journey to Sainthood." when I wrote about our six Black Catholic Americans who are on the road to canonization back in February. Saints, Pope Francis says, are not “unreachable” people who lived in the distant past but are people who “lived with their feet on the ground/son personas que han vivido con los pies en la tierra.” Sometimes when we talk about the saints we make them seem larger than life and their lives aren’t ones we really want to imitate. Sr. Thea’s life, however was different—it was grounded, inclusive, and lived for God, and she continues to inspire others live a life grounded in God.

I had learned about Sr. Thea some years ago when I came across a video of her singing at a meeting of the U. S. Catholic Bishops in 1989. It was a year before she died of cancer and her joy is ever present even though she is in pain and confined to a wheelchair because of her illness. Pope Francis sees holiness as both a gift and a calling. “It is a matter of increasingly maturing the awareness that we are grafted onto Christ,...and therefore we can and must live with Him and in Him as children of God.” Sr. Thea shows us what the Popes words look like when lived out fully. May you enjoy learning about her life and gift of holiness.
