There was much going on Catholic news-wise last month. We’ve already highlighted two documentaries released last month, today we will focus on the Working Document for the Continental Stage (DCS) that was released 27 October. This document is the next stage in the Synod 2021-2024 process.
To back up for a moment, for those who don’t know what Synod 2021-2024 is, it’s the process of the Church journeying with and listening to the entire People of God that Pope Francis called for 2 years ago. The word “synod” means “journeying together.” The first stage was done at the local diocesan/parish level. Our diocese had listening sessions to hear about the concerns and hopes from everyone earlier this year; Holy Name had a listening session 30 April. The Continental Stage is the next stage of listening and discerning using what has been gathered from the diocesan listening session reports sent in to the Vatican from around the world.
The theme for this next stage is “Enlarge the Space of Your Tent,” taken from Isaiah 54:2. It’s a transforming theme as we, the People of God, discern how to be a church “capable of radical inclusion, shared belonging, and deep hospitality according to the teachings of Jesus. (DCS 31)
This prayer that Pope Francis gave at his opening address for Synod 2021-2024 can help us keep our hearts open to being transformed: Come, Holy Spirit!...Come among us, so that in this synodal experience we will not lose our enthusiasm, dilute the power of prophecy, or descend into useless and unproductive discussions. Come, Spirit of love, open our hearts to hear your voice! Come, Holy Spirit of holiness, renew the holy and faithful People of God! Come, Creator Spirit, renew the face of the earth! Amen.
