Parent Letter Faith Reflection

The more I think about it, the more I realize there is nothing more artistic than to love others./Cuanto más lo pienso, más me doy cuenta de que no hay nada más artístico que amar a los demás.—Vincent van Gogh

Van Gogh and Modigliani are two of my favorite artists. As much as I enjoy these artists they both died well before I was born so seeing them in person was never going to happen. That’s why I enjoy going to Art Fairs - I can talk to the artist, I can hear their story from them.

I did that this past Sunday in downtown Redlands. Not only did I enjoy talking with the artist I bought a print from, this time I even knew one of the artists displaying their works; seeing Patrick Downey, Mrs. Downey’s husband, selling his custom bracelets and anklets was next level art walking. It showed to me how art creates community as I talked to people I knew, interacted with those who I didn’t, and generally just enjoyed taking it all in.

“Beauty,” Pope Francis told a group of musicians, actors, poets, painters, dancers, sculptors, and architects last year, “is capable of creating communion, because it unites God, humanity and creation in a single symphony; because it joins the past, the present and the future; because it draws different people and distant people into the same place and involves them in the same gaze,...A characteristic of the artist is that he or she is not limited by time, because art speaks to all ages. The artist is not limited by space either, because beauty can touch in each person what is universal — especially the thirst for God — transcending the borders of languages and cultures.”

Knowing how art goes beyond limits of time and space as we head into Holy Week we can pray with the art around us and let it touch what is the best in us, “because beauty is always a source of joy, putting us in contact with divine goodness.”
