Principal's Letter Faith Reflection

Lord, I have never been eloquent...I am slow of speech and tongue./Señor, yo nunca he sido una persona elocuente...Yo soy torpe para hablar y me expreso con dificultad. -

Moses, Exodus/Exodo 4:10

The story of Moses turning down God when asked to go speak to Pharaoh is interesting: he could be any of us when we don’t think we are up to the task. Moses was hesitant, we are hesitant, he gave reasons why he couldn’t, we give reasons, he lacked trust, we lack trust.

Sometimes we don’t want to do something because we don’t trust God has called the right person, we worry we will make a mistake or not be successful, but as Sister Joan Chittister, OSB, wrote in her Vision and Viewpoint newsletter, “lack of faith in God is one thing, but lack of self-confidence can be just as bad.”

“To deny the abilities I’ve been given—thought, insight, wisdom, analysis, understanding, explanation, persuasion—is a virtual sin against creation,” said Chittister. “It withholds from the human community the very gifts I have been freely given for its good. Having gifts is nothing if we don’t use them.”

In the end Moses put his trust in God, and even though his speech impediment didn’t go away, he went to Pharaoh and did God’s bidding. Mistakes and failures will not define us. Instead, we can look beyond the limits we place on ourselves and trust “that God will make the rough ways smooth,” and in doing so, we will find God will make us worthy and bring success.
