Principal's Letter Faith Reflection

Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest./Vengan a mi todos los que están afligidos y agobiados, y yo los aliviaré.—Matthew/Mateo 11:28

A couple weeks ago Father Thomas talked about the acronym HALT - hungry, angry, lonely, tire - in his homily. In the reading from the Gospel of Mark (9:38-48) that Sunday Jesus was concerned with people sinning and showing them how to avoid it. The disciples are angry that someone is driving out demons in Jesus name but is not part of their group. Jesus counters their annoyance by helping them to see things in a different light when he says, “Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose their reward.”

In telling us about HALT, Fr. Thomas, like Jesus, was helping us to be proactive in leading us to virtue. If we know the things that can cause us to transgress we can take steps to avoid them. But when we have those moments—maybe even days—when we realize, like this post I saw on @Thewritersaying, “I’m not an early bird or a night owl. I’m some sort of permanently exhausted pigeon,” that it isn’t going to happen right away, we can lean into God’s great mercy and love. We may be tired, or hungry, or cranky, but God is still with us, and we can rest well in this knowledge.
