Principal's Letter Faith Reflection

Everything is new, Lord, and nothing is the same, nothing is old./Todo es Nuevo, Señor, y nada es igual, nada es Viejo. — Adriana Zarri

By time I got to the daily Mass on Easter Monday we all knew Pope Francis had passed away and we had already begun to mourn him and reflect on his life as a community. Throughout his pontificate Francis spoke often of God’s infinite mercy and love. In his final homily, given on Easter Sunday, this is the background to why he tells us we must set out to look for Jesus.

Pope Francis started his homily pointing out how the Gospel narrative shows Mary Magdalene and the other disciples running. Their running, he says, can be because they are concerned about Jesus’s body being gone, but also their haste can be expressing their desire for Jesus, “the yearning of the heart, the inner attitude of those who set out to search for Jesus. He , in fact, has risen from the dead and therefore is no longer in the tomb. We must look for him elsewhere.” We, too, move with haste not out of concern but because we are excited.

“This is the message of Easter: we must look for him elsewhere...We must take action, set out to look for him: look for him in life, look for him in the faces of our brothers and sisters, look for him in everyday business, look for him everywhere expect in the tomb…We must look for him without ceasing...He is alive and is with us always...He still wants to renew our life today.” With Jesus, everything begins.
