Principal's Letter Faith Reflection

You were born with potential. You were born with goodness and trust. You were born with ideals and dreams. You were born with greatness. You were born with wings. You are not meant for crawling, so don’t. You have wings. Learn to use them and fly.—Rumi

God is great. We see that in Scripture and in the amazing beauty of the world around us. In Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night he writes, “Be not afraid of greatness. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.”

We are made in God’s image and we are called to greatness. That doesn’t mean we won’t make mistakes, it doesn’t mean we will get an A on every test we take. Greatness is more like what Mark Twain said when he tells us to stay away from people who try to belittle our ambitions. “Small people always do that,” he said, “but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.”

We are here to help our kids achieve their potential. As the Rumi quote above highlights we are here to help them use their wings to fly as God has intended for them. This poem, Definition of Great by Lewis Warsh is another way to see this: Momentarily/the language of description is lost/what you see with your eyes is enough, for you, anyway/but how to get that sense of what you saw across/to another person/it’s possible/through the spirit in your voice/when you say/ “it was great!”/to convery/what happened/in that moment/& it was great/not only that/it was terrific, & interesting too/it was nice/& I had a good time doing it/I had fun./You should have been there. Not only that, it was beautiful./It was inspiring.
