Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.—Confucius
“The natural inclination many of us have when we read the word ’sacred’ is to be drawn towards what organized religion has told us to be especially revered,” wrote Brian Devlin, an online friend of mine, for the opening of an exhibit titled “Sacred.” Devlin found the art drew the viewer’s eye to the “sacredness and simple beauty of nature.”
Joan Chittister, OSB, lamented when she wrote in her Vision and Viewpoint e-newsletter about how modern culture doesn’t teach us the healing value of beauty or how to see it around us. “Beauty,” she said, “is meant to enable us to transcend the mundane...Beauty brings peace to the soul and satisfaction to the heart. To be enriched by beauty is to have within us the sight of life that will never go away, that will never leave us empty.” Beauty helps us to see the sacred wherever we are, and in doing this “we become the beauty we have come to see everywhere,”
Showcasing SHA talent: Valeria and Lulu in 4th made trash look beautiful. I also thanked them for being responsible and keeping their trash from getting all over the lunch area.
