Love is a gift from God. From 1 Corinthians 13:4 we know that love is patient, kind, that it’s not jealous. In Dilexi Te—I have loved you—Pope Leo shows how Jesus was insistent that “one cannot love God without extending one’s love to the poor. Love for our neighbor is tangible proof of the authenticity of our love for God.” Our love is meant to be active. “Jesus teaches that every act of love for one’s neighbor is in some way a reflection of divine charity.” Serving the poor, he continues several paragraphs later, “is not a gesture to be made ‘from above,’ but an encounter between equals, where Christ is revealed and adored...Therefore, when the Church bends down to care for the poor, it assumes its highest posture.”
Truly I tell you, just as you did this to one of the least of these brothers and sisters, you did it to me.—Matthew 25:40.
