Illustrated medieval manuscripts can be interesting, and amusing, as the images can seem odd to us today. There is no clear answer as to why so many of the drawings are funky but superstitions of the time, and the small space around the written part are some factors. Whatever the reasons these manuscripts look as they do they are a part of history. Dr. Matt Ponese, a history professor, uses humor on his social media accounts (@medievalistMatt), to bring these drawings and their history to a wider audience.
While old manuscripts might seem unusual this ancient collect (the opening prayer at Mass) is still fitting: Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the silent hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the work and the changes of this fleeting world may rest upon Thy eternal changelessness, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Showcasing SHA talent: Please, please, please, do not serve green beans for Thanksgiving. I won’t say who doesn’t like them but this is from Brielle in 7th.
