Principal's Letter Faith Reflection

Lent is a time for inward focus; a time of repentance and turning away from sin. Gargoyles, and grotesques are not part of churches in our area, but in medieval churches these carvings were common and were there to keep evil at bay and remind people of the need for repentance. Seeing these terrifying figures was very good at doing that.

When picturing a grotesque you likely did not picture Darth Vader, but if you happen to be visiting the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. this is what you will see. Installed in 1986, it’s a modern way of seeing evil, and like traditional gargoyles it also can help us to reflect on Joel 2:12: Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning. Rend your hearts, not your garments...For God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, rich in kindness, and relenting in punishment.

Showcasing SHA talent: Have to admit, not a big fan of gargoyles or rats but Jackson in 7th does draw them well.

God bless,
