In his Angelus talk on the Solemnity of the Assumption Pope Leo talked about two different ways we see this event. The first, and oldest way, is how the Dormition of the Mother of God (Theotokos) is depicted, as it is called in the Eastern Churches. This way highlights the central truth that having “died and risen, it is Christ who leads us to the destination for which we have been created, namely eternal life.” Icons showing Mary asleep with Jesus holding her soul while she is surrounded by his disciples is letting us know that in taking his Mother into heaven Jesus is fulfilling what he promised; When I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also (John 14:3).
We fly to thy protection, O holy Mother of God. Despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Mary.—Sub tuum praesidium, the oldest known prayer to our Blessed Mother.
