The feast of Saint Francis of Assisi was this past Sunday. He is often the first saint we think of when we think of love and devotion to God’s creation, but there is another saint who had a profound respect for nature and the earth. Saint Hildegard, a 12th century mystic, writer, composer, and now Doctor of the Church, saw how the earth sustains humanity and worked hard to not injury or destroy it; “Creation is the song of God,” as she saw it. Her astonishment and knowledge of the world around her is what made her so sought after in her lifetime. One of her poems speaks of God and nature: Glance at the sun. See the moon and the stars. Gaze at the beauty of earth’s greenings. Now, think. What delight God gives to humankind with all these things. All nature is at the disposal of humankind. We are to work with it. For without we cannot survive.
