Art is how God loves us, I read recently. Sometimes when we think of art and God we think of sacred art but Pope Benedict talked about art in a broader sense in a general audience he gave in 2011. “A work of art,” he said, “is a product of the creative capacity of the human being who in questioning visible reality, seeks to discover its deep meaning and to communicate it through the language of forms, color, and sound. Art is able to manifest and make visible the human need to surpass the visible, it expresses the thirst and the quest for the infinite.” God speaks to human beings through beauty: beauty, through its many artistic forms, is God’s language that reaches where human language cannot.
He who works with his hands is a laborer. He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands, head, and heart is an artist. St. Francis of Assisi
