Welcome to LEAP (Learn-Explore-Achieve-Program)/Tadpoles for the 2018-2019 school year!

My name is Kathy Seter and I am so blessed to be the LEAP/Tadpoles coordinator/teacher.  This is my 13th year at Sacred Heart Academy. I received my undergraduate degree at California State University, Fullerton and completed my post-graduate education at the University of California, Riverside. In addition, I received my Certification in the Education of the Gifted and Talented from UCR in December 2014. Prior to SHA, I was employed by the Redlands Unified School District as the 4th-5th grade Intervention teacher at Lugonia Elementary School and as a substititue teacher throughout the district grades K-12, including Special Education and RISE (Redlands Independent Study Education) program. I am also a member of the California Association for the Gifted (CAG), "an organization of educators and parents who strive to improve education for individuals who demonstrate giftedness."

I was blessed to attend Catholic schools (St. Margaret Mary, Chino and Pomona Catholic Girls High Scool) and strongly believe in the value of a faith-filled education.  I have been a proud Catholic school parent since 1996.  My son, Jimmy, is an SHA, Aquinas High School, Marquette University graduate. My daughter, Elizabeth, is an SHA and Aquinas High School graduate, currently attending Grand Canyon University.

I am an active member of The Holy Name of Jesus community and enjoy various activities: sporting events, reading, concerts, movies, travel, and time with family and friends.

Under the direction of our principal Mrs. Williams LEAP was launched in the Fall of 2012. LEAP is a hands-on, enrichment math program for grades 2-6. I am excited to take on this venture to provide our students with the best possible education in a faith-filled environment.

Counting by 3's

Our newest LEAPers (3rd grade) practiced multiplication facts counting by 3's. Every day we continue to practice our math facts as we begin to learn the relationship between multiplication and division.

Week of Sept. 22-26

Next week 3rd and 5th grade will be taking the Cogat test. Due to testing schedules 3rd grade will not have LEAP class on Wednesday or Thursday, 5th grade will not have LEAP class on Wednesday.

Have a restful 3-day weekend! Blessings, Mrs. Seter

Participation/Behavior Grade

We are off to a wonderful 1st week of LEAP. I feel truly blessed to work with your children!

Please note that I will incorporating a participation/behavior grade (worth 10% of total grade) into Gradelink each week. Every day, each student will begin with 5 points. After one verbal warning, points will be deducted for talking, inattentiveness, etc. In a typical week, students will have the opportunity to earn 25 points toward their grade (5 per day). Of course, points will not be deducted if your child is absent.

Also, please remember to check our LEAP webpage for homework and other news. Thank you, Mrs. Seter

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a restful, enjoyable summer vacation. Here is a quick update on LEAP news:

-our classroom is now located in the former Computer Lab (a huge THANK YOU to the McFarland Family, the Kruger Family, Mr. Vansant, and my husband Jim for all their help with moving, cleaning, and painting. It was a big job, but we are finally finished)

-all summer I continued my education and have almost completed my GATE Certification, just one more course to go :)

-for the next couple of weeks I will be assessing all students in grades 3-6 as potential LEAP students. We use the following screening tools: STAR, IOWA and Cogat scores, beginning-year assessment, report card grades, teacher recommendation, and a behavior characteristics scale.  Once completed, I will inform parents of their child's LEAP placement. Thank you for your patience during this process.

LEAP family letter 2014 15

Please read the following letter regarding LEAP for the 2014-15 school year. Your student was also given a copy today in class (not incoming 7th grade, since that honors math program differs from LEAP). Feel free to contact me if you should have any questions.

Thank You, Mrs. Seter

Despicable Shapes

It's finally here! Please enjoy the 3rd grade LEAP video focusing on lines and polygons. A huge thank you to Aquinas student, Allison who helped produce our video. Also thank you to the Corpus family for helping with costumes.

L.E.A.P. Evaluation

Today all students were given a L.E.A.P. Evaluation form. Your opinions matter to us! Please take a few minutes to complete the form and return. Thank you and have wonderful FOUR day weekend.

God Bless, Mrs. Seter

LEAP'n Lemonade

Just a reminder that 4th grade LEAP will be having a lemonade sale on Tuesday, May 20 at morning recess. 4th grade parents - PLEASE let me know if you can donate some pre-made lemonade (any brand and size). We need enough for over 300 students and staff. All proceeds will be donated to 8th grader Julia and her family. THANKS!

5th Grade Finding Volume with Legos

Students created 3-D shapes using Legos to find volume.

4th Grade Lemonade Stand Project

Today, the 4th graders began reading the novel The Lemonade War. The plot centers around a brother and sister and focuses on starting a business. As we read through the book, we will learn business vocabulary and develop our own business plan to set up a lemonade stand on campus (pending approval from Mrs. Williams). We are hoping to sell at morning recess one day next week. The students have decided to donate all profits to an organization for our 8th grader Julia Macloed.  Parents are welcome to help on the day of the sale or to donate items. I will keep you posted. Thank you!

3rd Grade Paper Plate Equivalent Fractions
