fourth grade families this is my sister I wanted to share a video with you today regarding what the fourth graders have been doing in class lately especially what problem that we did today we are working in our Engage New York module 2 unit conversions what are the problems we did today and I know this is really small so I'll go ahead and read it to you but then I'm going to model for you how the students were able to solve this problem giraffe was 5 m 20 cm tall an elephant was 1 meter 77 centimeters shorter send the giraffe  a rhinoceros was 1 M 58 cm shorter than the elephant how tall was the Rhinoceros so I have some information that's going to help me out but I also have some information that I need to find out  the directions are asking me to make a tape. which we also call a bar model you can use the words either way they both mean the same thing and what a tape diagram does or a bar model is it helps to visualize the stop one  okay so my actual answer I'm looking for his how tall was the rhinoceros I'm comparing three different animals a giraffe an l Ventana rhinoceros so I'm going to have 3 different bars 20 centimeters long so because I know how tall the traffic is I can go ahead and plug that information in here my next animal is an elephant and it was 1 M 77 CM shorter than a giraffe so my next bar I'm going to label eat and I'm going to make it shorter the bar is going to be as long this helps me see that the elephant is smaller than the giraffe yeah there's a difference Here If You Can Tell and what the students do is they will normally indicate that  what's a bracket and the difference is one meter  77 centimeters  my last animal is a rhinoceros I'm going to be labeled that in our and the rhinoceros was 1 meter 58 cm shorter than the elephant so on my animals keep speller so my bars are going to keep getting smaller  the difference between this one here 1 meter 58 cm  now with this information I can plugging in some information now I don't know what my rhinoceroses that's my ultimate question that they're asking so I'm putting a? In that bar right there play some how tall the giraffe is I can figure out how tall the elephant is the giraffe is 5 meters  20 cm tall the elephant is 1 M 77 CM shorter so that's going to be a subtraction problem right away I can see there's a problem here 20 take away 777 I can't do that because the 20 is smaller than the 7 so I'm going to need to go next door to my neighbor and he's going to help me out  I'm going to borrow from that 5 meters and I'm not just borrowing I'm borrowing 100 and the reason I know that is because there are 100 centimeters in one meter so I'm going to rewrite this problem to make it easy for me to see I know I'm borrowing from him so that's going to change to 4 meters  this 20 is going to change to 120 cm remember I'm borrowing up this line here is going to stay the same now I can do this because the 120 is bigger than the 77 so I'm okay but even within here I'm going to have to do some grouping again 0 take away 7 I can't do that I have to go next door and regroup  one day something I can't do that either got to keep going next door asking for some help 43  then my there is 4 take away one is three  this is how tall my elephant is so I can plug those numbers into my Elephant Bar I'm not done yet remember my question is how tall is the Rhinoceros  so if I know how tall the often as I can figure out the rhinoceros because there's a difference here so I'm going to go and do it the next step take out all my elephant is which is 3 meters 43 cm  and I'm going to subtract the difference right here one meter  58 centimeters again I'm running into another problem 43 take away 58 I can't do that I'm going to do this same thing here that I had to do up here I'm going to go next door to my meters and ask for some help so remember I'm borrowing from that spree but I'm not just tell me one I'm borrowing 100 because there's 100 centimeters in one meter I'm going to rewrite my problem this three is going to change to a Peter this 43 changes to 143 centimeters this line stays the same and subtracting is my rhinoceros is shorter if he was taller I'd be adding got to do some regrouping again here  13 take away 8 is 53 take away 5 I can't do that 13 take away 5 is 8 2 take away one as one this is how tall my Rhino is  so that would get plugged in here one meter  85 cm the part of Common Core math is asking us to do a number of steps in order to get our answer we need to read draw and what's the RDW Nar bar model so we can visualize it and our right is to write a sentence so in order to finish the problem  Levi's is one meter 85 centimeters there you go with just solved our problem  that's kind of your fourth graders you're doing thank you very much bye bye
